This purpose of this course is to give an overview of Medication-Assisted Treatment For Opioid Addiction (MAT) in Opioid Treatment Programs (OTP) based on the Treatment Improvement Protocol developed by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration of US Department of Health and Human Services. Opioid addiction has become a major medical problemand an explosive social issue so maintenance treatment for opioid addiction is both an effective and necessary treatment option. Treatment providers and students who want to understand the principles and procedures of opioid addiction and treatment will benefit from this course. 

Course Objectives 

1. Understand opioid addiction as a medical disorder and review the history of the use of opioids in the United States. 

2. Evaluate the pharmacology and clinical applications of the medications used for treating opioid addiction and review screening and assessment procedures for admission to MAT. 

3. Explore types of services, level of care, and phases of treatment in MAT.

4. Review approaches to providing care in MAT, including the treatment of multiple substance use and co-occurring disorders in opioid treatment. 

5. Examine drug testing as an objective measure of treatment efficacy as well as complications and treatment options for opioid addicted pregnant women.
