Course Description:

(Includes 3 hours of Cultrual Competency + genetics, biology, pharmacology, adolescents, pregnancy, violence, mental health, physical health and prevention)

Alcoholism: The Science Made Easy highlights current findings in the field of alcoholism, and presents science-based information in a concise, easy-to-understand format. Among the many topics covered are: genetics and other risk factors, pharmacological approaches, neurobiological consequences of alcohol abuse, special populations, violence, injury, pregnancy, adolescents, prevention, mental health and physical health.

Course Objectives:

1.  Describe the specific alcohol related problems in the adolescent population

2.  Identify and name several neurobiological consequences of alcohol abuse

3.  Discuss how genetics and other risk factors contribute to alcoholism

4.  Explain the impact of alcoholism on mental and physical health

5.  Name the pharmacological approaches used in the treatment of alcoholism

6.  Gain an understanding of the connection between alcohol, violence and injury
