Course Description

This course was developed using information from the National Institute on Aging, which is the lead agency for Alzheimer's Disease research at the National Institutes of Health.  The purpose of the course is to explain what the disease is, describes the main areas in which researchers are working, and highlight new approaches for helping families and friends care for people with Alzheimer's Disease.   This valuable information would be helpful to professionals in the medical, mental health, or social work field, or for anyone who is interested in gaining more knowledge about this disorder which is the most common cause of dementia among older people .

Course Objectives

1.  Recognize the complex workings of a healthy brain, including how it functions and what happens to it during the normal aging process, and compare how the brain changes with Alzheimer's Disease.

2.  Identify the early signs and symptoms of Alzheimer's Disease and  the progression of the mild, moderate, and severe stages of
the disease.

3.  Evaluate the causes of Alzheimer's Disease including genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors, and review treatment strategies along with proposed methods to slow, delay, or prevent Alzheimer's.

4.  Examine new techniques for diagnosing Alzheimer's.
